Silver 999, 925 and 800: what each hallmark means

Pure silver (999 fineness) is used in investment bars and coins. Jewellery, cutlery and silverware are made in standard silver: 925 (sterling or "primera ley", the standard in Spain and almost everywhere) or 800 ("segunda ley", common in old cutlery and German or Italian pieces).

The price per gram of each is the pure-silver quote multiplied by its purity. A 925 tray is worth 92.5% of the pure-silver price for every gram it weighs; an 800 cutlery set, 80%.

How much are X grams of silver worth today?

Silver price when selling: what are you paid?

The reference price above is the market spot quote for pure silver: what the metal is worth on the market, not an offer. When you sell a piece, what you are paid comes from three facts: the exact weight in grams, the real purity (which does not always match the hallmark) and the quote on the day it is valued.

At OroSeguro we weigh each piece on a calibrated scale, measure purity with a laboratory XRF spectrometer, apply the official quote of the day and send you a written offer with a piece-by-piece breakdown. No hidden margins or fees: if you decline, we return your items free and insured.

Selling a silver cutlery set: how a full canteen is valued

A cutlery set is usually the heaviest piece of silver in a house, which is why it is the one that surprises people on the scale. A full sterling (925) canteen for twelve comfortably passes a kilo. The value comes from the same sum as any other silver piece: weight × purity × the quote of the day. The hallmark is normally on the back of the handle or on the edge of a spoon: 925 in most sets, or 800 in older canteens and in many German and Italian pieces.

One detail is worth knowing before you send anything, because it changes the result: knives are almost never solid silver. The handle is a silver shell filled with resin or plaster, and the blade is stainless steel, so a knife weighs far more than it is worth. The same is true of candlesticks and of some weighted trays. Those pieces are weighed net of the part that is not silver, and the offer breakdown itemises it piece by piece.

And not everything that looks like silver cutlery is silver. Pieces marked "alpaca", "nickel silver", "silver plated" or "EPNS" are a coating over a base metal and have no value for their silver content. XRF analysis tells the two apart in seconds without scratching the piece. If your set turns out to be plated we tell you and return it free and insured: we do not charge you for checking.

Frequently asked questions about the silver price

How much is a gram of silver worth today?
The silver price per gram on this page is the international market spot quote, in dollars per troy ounce, converted to euros at the ECB reference exchange rate and divided by the 31.1035 grams in an ounce.
How much is a gram of 925 silver worth today?
92.5% of the pure-silver price. The table on this page shows the per-gram value of 925 and 800 silver calculated on today’s quote.
Do you buy cutlery and silverware?
Yes. Cutlery, trays, coffee services, frames and silver jewellery. They are valued by weight and real purity, measured with XRF analysis, at the day’s quote. Pieces with a core of another material (knife handles, weighted candlesticks) are weighed net of the part that is not silver.
Is it worth selling silver?
It depends on the weight. Per gram it is worth far less than gold, but silverware usually weighs hundreds of grams: a full 925 cutlery set can weigh more than a kilo. Our insured pack accepts silver alongside gold at no extra cost.
